High Point University Academic Calendar 2023-2024 – After receiving support from GPS families and staff, Gilbert Public Schools will officially transition to a new school calendar beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. The new calendar means students and staff will have two weeks off during fall, winter and spring break. The board officially adopted the new calendar in February 2021 after a survey found that both families and GPS staff supported the change.
The school year begins full-day classes on July 26, 2022, eight calendar days before the current school year. Starting early provides students with greater opportunities for enrichment programs and academic participation when needed. Teachers on our school campuses will receive professional development training according to the previous school calendar. Although the fall and spring vacations were extended, care was taken not to disrupt the learning environment.

Gilbert Public Schools will now operate on the same schedule as neighboring districts such as Chandler USD, Higley USD and Queen Creek USD. GPS students and staff will continue to have a shortened weekend on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and Spring Break. Vacations make it easier for families to prioritize time and plan trips. For families concerned about child care needs, Gilbert Public Schools continues to offer counseling programs, youth athletics and summer camps.

In elementary school, plans are made at the beginning of the school year because summer temperatures can make it difficult to go outside on some days. If there are hot advisory days, GPS Elementary students will be provided with games, videos, and a variety of other activities during recess. Schools will determine appropriate activities based on the needs of their students.
The new school calendar will move GPS Junior High's on-campus athletics to four seasons, allowing each school to add boys volleyball to its roster of team sports. Also, boys and girls soccer will be expanded for seventh and eighth graders. The junior season is now nine weeks long, including playoffs, and some schedule changes are planned. Gilbert will provide opportunities to enhance player development for youth athletes. The 2022-2023 junior league schedule is now available online. GPS athletes and families can contact their school's campus athletic director with questions about the impact of the calendar on youth sports. The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) will continue to monitor and regulate athletics at GPS high schools.
Also, new calendar changes will be implemented for the 2023-2024 school year. The first full day session for that academic year will be on 25 July 2023.
