The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer team opened the spring season with a 2-1 overtime win over Butler University on Friday afternoon.

It was the Cougars' first game since Nov. 20, 2019, as the coronavirus wiped out the 2020 season. SIUE led 1-0 at halftime before the rally. Seth Korenek scored the tying goal in the 74th minute and extra time. In the 10th minute of the second overtime, Oskar Lenz, assisted by Korenek, scored a penalty and brought the Cougars victory.

"I feel like we're as ready as we can be after such a long layoff," Cougars coach Kyle Wasserman said. "We have 12 new boys, but there is also a good group coming back that we can move on to. The boys are excited for the new season."

Key players for the Cougars include team captains — sophomore goalie Luis Martorello and center Jake Meyer, who began his college career at Indiana. He will be supported by young wings Corban McAvinha and Kelby Phillips.

Wasserman is also kind enough to pass on Vincent Jackson II, a junior who played nine games as a freshman at Virginia Tech.

"Vincent is probably our most dangerous forward," said the coach. "And he's one of the most competitive guys I've ever coached."

The Cougars return to action on Feb. 17 at St. Bronze Boot in the game at John's University. Louis. SIUE's home opener in February. 21 against Evansville.

This will be the last season in the Mid-American Conference for the Cougars. They will return to the Missouri Valley Conference in the fall.

"It's definitely something we're looking forward to," Wasserman said. "SIUE has a rich football history in the Valley. It's a great fit for our program."

Missouri State women's basketball forward Brice Cullip tied a Missouri Valley Conference record when she was named Player of the Week for the third straight week. Only Bears legend Jackie Styles and Sarah Rhine of Drake and Lizzy Wendell have won the award three times in a row. No one has ever won four weeks in a row.

Kalip, a 5-foot-5 senior from Sapulpa, Okla., averaged 15.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.7 steals in three games last week. The 25 Bears improve to 11-2 overall and 7-0 in the league.

• Missouri State junior Amelia Flynn (Timberland) was named MVC Player of the Week after helping the Bears improve to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in league play with a win over SIU Carbondale. Flynn, an outside hitter, averaged 3.78 kills, 3.67 digs and 4.61 points.

• Another three-time honoree, Lindenwood guard TJ Crockett (University) earned another Great Lakes Valley Basketball Player of the Week award when he scored 30 points in a 91-90 win over Southwest Baptist last week.

• The Missouri State women swept MVC honors in swimming and diving this week as Ashley Yarbrough (Marquette) won the 1-meter and 3-meter dives and senior Libby Howell won the 200 and 500 freestyles with two wins over Drury. Howell finished second in the 200 butterfly and swam the fastest leg of the winning 200 freestyle relay team.

Diver John David Spann was named Mid-American Conference Diver of the Week after recording two top-three finishes for SMU last week. He finished second with 3 meters and third with 1 meter.

SIU Edwardsville's 141-pounder Saul Erwin was named the USA Mid-Wrestler of the Week. Ervin improved to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the MAC with three wins last week. He is the first Cougar wrestler to earn all-MAC honors.

Tryouts / Openings

• Missouri Baptist senior Jason Harman (Afton) was named NAIA Player of the Week after 102 kills, 24 rebounds, 6 kills and five blocks as the Spartans went 4-0 last week. Harman was a second team All-American last year.

Few of Missouri's second-year players on either side of the ball will see the field when Eli Drinkwitz retires in 2022.

The Tigers' new-look defense under coach Blake Baker will be unveiled Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
