Teaneck Recycling Calendar 2023
Teaneck Recycling Calendar 2023 – The Hackensack River Greenway Advisory Board's mission is to inform the public about, create, and oversee the 5.5-mile Hackensack River Greenway through Teaneck. The Greenway includes a hiking and nature trail. Native plants are encouraged within the greenway to protect and enhance the Hackensack River by creating a natural, green buffer between the developed area of Teaneck and the river.
History: The idea of increasing recreational use of the Hackensack River has been around for a long time. In the 1970s, a group of Teaneck residents began formulating the idea of building a greenway across the Hackensack River. Many municipalities have already built sections of the road, while others are in progress. The Teaneck Hackensack River Greenway Advisory Board was formed in 1995 to design and develop the Hackensack River Greenway through Teaneck. Friends of the Greenway, a non-profit volunteer group, started in 2000 to provide sidewalks, lessons, cleaning, and maintenance of the trail. Notes for Commentary, Prof. Rick Mills, placed at intervals along the greenway, describes the area's flora, fauna, and historical attractions.

Today, the Greenway passes through 3 municipal parks and the FDU campus in Teaneck. Ultimately, Teaneck's Greenway is to become a sustainable trail across the river, connecting neighboring cities with planned trails.

Midsex News – County and local officials expect recycling and solid waste collection delays in many municipalities to peak during the first few weeks of July.

According to a statement Tuesday from the Middlesex County Development Authority (MCIA), which contracts with International Weather Services (IVS) to provide traffic in 17 of the 25 municipalities, IVS has increased its staff and there have been no delays. Recycling services for the last two days.
IVS Recycling serves Cranbury, Dunellen, Helmetta, Jamesburg, Middlesex, Milltown, Monroe, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, Old Bridge, Piscataway, Plainsboro, Sayreville, South Amboy, South Plainfield, South River and Spotswood.

MCIA hopes that continued efforts to maintain adequate staffing levels will result in a regular recycling program during normal pick-up times, which will result in fewer delays, the statement said.

Teaneck-based IVS is a waste collection and recycling company owned and operated throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio, according to its website.

On May 10, IVS announced the acquisition of Solterra Recycling Solutions, an Ewing Township-based solid waste, organic waste and recycling facility serving residential and commercial customers throughout Central Jersey and the Philadelphia area.
IVS said in a statement Monday that it "recently acquired Solterra Recycling and is actively working to increase the number of drivers and collection vehicles to improve service quality across Solterra's entire service footprint."

An unnamed MCIA official said in a July 12 statement that IVS informed the district that a national staffing crisis and unusual calls were causing the delay.
"This problem is not unique to our community; cities, towns and counties across the country face similar waste/recycling issues as the national shortage of certified truck drivers and other employees affects the industry," the statement said. "Middlesex County is one of these struggles. Not independent. MCIA and IVS have been in discussions for the past few weeks to find a solution to this problem and discuss steps to take to resolve the problem. As we work through this emergency, we will continue to have open communication with IVS to do everything we can to resolve this issue for our residents.

According to the MCIA, the county has been working with Solterra/IVS to provide recycling services to municipalities since 2015 "with great success."

"By pooling resources, the MCIA will be able to pass on the savings in recycling costs to the tax payers," said an MCIA official. "In a market where recycling costs have more than doubled for many municipalities across the state, MCIA offers cities financial stability." The current contract was effective for 3 years from March 31, 2020 with two optional one-year renewals. The annual base bid price is $6,908,776.32."

Mayor Brad Cohen told residents in late June that East Brunswick, which contracts independently with IVS for solid waste collection and recycling, had experienced pickup delays.
"I think the problem with waste, whether it's solid waste or recyclables, is solved," Mayor Brad Cohen said Tuesday. "I haven't heard any complaints about it in the last few weeks. It's not perfect now, but it's definitely improved. Hopefully the worst is behind us, but I don't have a crystal ball."

Cohen said complaints peaked in the first two weeks of July, but have gradually improved over the past two weeks.
The mayor said: "First of all, it's a labor issue. "Another issue is that the trucks are very mechanical and parts are prone to break down. Lots of trucks in yards waiting for parts to arrive. Everyone has the same problems."

In response to the delays, the city extended hours at its recycling center and tried to connect IVS with employment agencies that could help find workers, Cohen said. He said he believes he helped the community by "making them aware of what's going on."
Middlesex County Garbage, Recycling Collections Are Picking Up
The municipality currently has a five-year contract with IVS for waste collection that began in 2019. Solid waste collection costs in 2019 were $1,790,460 and recycling collection costs were $931,800. This year, the municipality pays $1,950,791.50 for solid waste collection and $1,015,240 for garbage collection. In 2023, the final year of the contract, the municipality will pay $2,007,364.50 for solid waste collection and $1,044,682.00 for recycling collection.

Because the city is bigger, Cohen said, "it has the power to negotiate a better price with IVS."
"For the average homeowner, we pay $265 a year for all their trash and recycling, which is significantly less than other cities," he said.

"Garbage collection costs have increased for these service providers, and the additional costs will be passed on," Cohen said. "They may switch to single car trucks due to shortage of labor and labor issues they face.
