Westport School Calendar 2023-24 – WESTPORT – Following the renovation of Coleytown High School, the school board has taken a holistic approach to the building's needs.

The new approach is outlined in the region's five-year capital plan, which is budgeted at $1.8 million in 2022-2023 and $1.5 million in 2023-2024. Supervisor Thomas Scaris said the numbers are currently in place.

The third grade was rated as fair schools overall, but the current Coleytown Elementary School was selected as the only school to replace in three to five years.

"There's been a lot of talk over the past two months," Scaris said. "Plan is emerging and it is proposed that all long-term projects will be delayed in capital projections until a long-term solution is identified in April."

He said the long-term plans include a complete renovation or new construction, but it is too early to make a decision.

"Colletown, due to the age of the facility, needs a thorough evaluation in the fall and early winter, similar to a long multitasking process," Scaris said. "The overall valuation of Colletown is a top priority for capital forecasting and it is recommended to start this spring, possibly using existing operating funds."

Scaris hopes to include regularly scheduled inspections in the capital improvement plan. He said that the council should review it annually and suggested that the finance and facilities committees review it three times.

"I firmly believe in that prediction," Scaris said. "We have very thick ice."

Scaris said the plan for the new capital is different from prioritizing projects and taking a "holistic" look at school facilities.

Scaris said project financing appears to be the main driver of previous capital plans. Project funding remains an important factor, which will now run in tandem with an "open" priority process.
