These four students and dozens of others from all walks of life are getting a second chance at college, thanks in part to Metropolitan State University of Denver's newly funded "Finish What You Start" program. The program provides recipients with personal, professional, academic and financial support to complete their degree.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the four-year graduation rate for public colleges and universities is 33.3%, indicating that many students face barriers to completing a four-year degree.

"We want these students to be able to see themselves in the future they envisioned when they started school," Ridgeway said. "We are not limited to the academic credits needed to graduate: financial literacy, document writing and other business skills are part of the program."

Students also have a navigator (or mentor) throughout the program and receive $1,000,000 in financial aid during the first semester of re-enrollment. Then they earn $500 each semester until the last semester, when they earn another $1,000,000. Additional funding is available for emergencies and to help recipients complete their degrees.

Ishnenah, who is just starting her first year in the program, sees the importance of mentors in her success. "Having a teacher really helps emotionally," she said. "Mina said it will take 10 years to complete my bachelor's degree. They supported me to finish my degree and having someone watching my back just made all the difference. "I know I can reach out when I need help, and it gives me a chance to connect."

When Ishneah started college in 2017, she majored in Aerospace, but switched to Cybersecurity. He sees a lot of potential in the field and hopes to return. "I hope we can see this program at other universities as well." "This program is a great investment, and we can all benefit from a more educated workforce and more job opportunities."

Finish What You Start serves 89 students, and administrators hope to enroll 450 more this fall. "In total, we're funding 900 students, and that should be finished by the spring of 2026 when the grant money runs out," Ridgeway said.

Grant recipients must be Colorado residents, have no other undergraduate degree, have at least 30 degree credits, and must have withdrawn from school at least two semesters prior to re-enrollment.

Keryan is a junior who hopes to graduate with a degree in Accounting in the fall of 2023 or spring of 2024.

"I have a support system that I didn't have in 2009," he said. "My wife and four children are very supportive, and I do financial analysis and risk modeling in my workforce. I like to fill in some of the knowledge gaps in my degree."

"My kids are excited, to be honest, and my 25-year-old has pushed me," he said. "I was always a good student, but I was afraid of going back to my age – I was afraid that I would pass out, but I didn't. "I was very focused and got good grades. " he said.

Carol Otero was studying to be an X-ray technician in junior high school when Covid-19 stopped her. He completed a drug rehabilitation program at Las Animas and said he decided to return to school after being contacted by MSU Denver about joining the "Finish What You Start" program.

She is currently studying to become an addiction counselor under the direction of Monique Left Hand Ox at MSU Denver's Department of Human Services and Counseling.

"I found a lot of people behind me and I was successful," Carol said. "I'm ready for the next chapter and I know I can share my mistakes and experience to help others in the same situation. I'm happy to take that opportunity," he said.
