NYU's student government discussed revisions to the academic calendar and support for sustainability measures in dining halls at its third meeting of the fall 2021 semester on Nov. 18. Secularization of the Academic Calendar Robert López-Irizarry, student representative of the task force revising the calendar, detailed revisions the committee hopes to make to existing guidelines for the NYU calendar. A busy group tries to prioritize students' wellness days and breaks. The potential calendar changes won't take full effect until summer 2024, 2027, when the task force's proposals will be presented to the University Senate's Academic Affairs Committee by March of next year. The task force's goal is to make Election Day a university holiday, add more breaks and study days, set a consistent start for the semester after Labor Day, and keep commencements and graduations from taking place during finals week. "A lot of times during finals week, departments plan commencement-specific events," Lopez-Irizarry said. "Obviously, this creates a huge problem for many students who are graduating." Alternate Senator Tzivia Appleman, who represents Jewish students and women of faith, asked if the task force would consider scheduling graduation programs on religious holidays. In 2021, the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development and the College of Arts and Sciences have rescheduled their commencements to avoid a conflict with the Jewish holiday of Shavuot. "The schools didn't put it in the context of a religious holiday, at least from what I could gather," Lopez-Irizarry said. "They want to focus on making NYU a secular institution." Reducing Food Container Waste According to Laura Piraino, director of sustainability at NYU Eats, Third North and Downstein cafeterias are piloting a new takeout system called Ozzy, which aims to combat single-container waste. After paying a $5 deposit, students receive a reusable Ozzie container that they can use to transport food from the dining halls. Dirty containers can be exchanged for clean ones at participating canteens. NYU Eats cleans dirty containers and recycles them. NYU is considering expanding the Eats Ozzie program to other dining halls and to the NYU Brooklyn campus. The next SGA meeting this semester will be held on December 2nd to vote on internal student government policies. A version of this article appeared in the electronic edition on 22 November 2021.
