Jewral (Jayr) Mcintyre completed one of his biggest challenges, earning his bachelor's degree from Keizer University in Tampa earlier this month.

Sgt. and Bronze Star recipient was deployed a total of four times during his military career and retired in 2016 after being discharged for severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

After retiring, he moved to Tampa and spent more than 77 days in the hospital battling PTSD and injuries. Frequent hospitalizations led Mcintyre to change his mind, and soon a friend suggested that Mcintyre attend Keizer University to pursue higher education. That decision changed his life.

Mcintyre stayed in touch with Michael Wilkes when he enrolled at Keizer, an admissions counselor at Keizer University in Tampa, and has repeatedly referred to Wilkes as his "guiding light" throughout his recovery. He credits Wilkes with giving him hope that it is still possible to be a viable member of society despite his disability.

Working toward his degree and connecting with other veterans on campus gave Mcintyre a sense of purpose and inspired him to serve as president of the Keizer Chapter of the Student Veterans of America. Mcintyre began helping other veterans earn degrees at Keizer University.

"I told them, 'Hey, you don't have to sit at home. You can go to school, use the GI Bill®," Mcintyre said. "I wanted them to have the experience I had."

One by one, Mcintyre took in other veterans, sheltered them in his home, fed them, clothed them, and helped them approach Keizer with his G.I. Bills.

"I want to prove to the world that wounded veterans can continue to help the community," he said, referring to his passion for helping other veterans. – We really want to contribute.

Keiser University Student Overcomes Ptsd To Earn Bachelor's Degree

Many of the students he helped enroll have already graduated or are still working hard to earn their degree. When Mcintyre himself walked across the stage in early June, he said it was a mix of emotions.

"There was a lot of emotion because I was walking not only with my name, but with fallen veterans who didn't make it and who are no longer here," Mcintyre reflected.

Mcintyre said participating in Keizer's classes has kept him focused and involved, and his desire in the future is to inspire other veterans to do the same.

"You can do it," Mcintyre said, speaking directly to struggling veterans. "If they need me, I'll go and be that manager to talk to their consultants. I'm willing to do that."

In the fall, Mcintyre will attend Keizer University in Tampa to complete his M.B.A. in international business, which he plans to use for his private security business, Rat Pack Worldwide Security and Consultant Inc. He started the business back in 2018. with fellow veteran and Keizer University graduate Remi Rivera.

"I want them [student veterans] to excel. I want them to continue their education and get out of the house and do something about it," he said.
