GREENSBORO, NC (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tuesday a new model football schedule that will take effect beginning with the 2023 season.

The new model is based on a 3-5-5 structure, where each team will play its three main rivals each year and face the league's other 10 teams twice over a four-year cycle, once at home and once away. The schedule allows each team to face at least all 13 conference opponents home and away over a four-year period. Earlier today, league athletic directors and college athletic representatives approved the structure.

The new schedule eliminates the Atlantic and Coastal divisions, and all 14 schools will play in one division starting in 2023. The top two teams by conference winning percentage will play for the Bank of America Metro ACC Football Championship on the first Saturday in December at Charlotte Stadium in North Carolina. In May, the NCAA Division I Board of Governors approved a relaxation of existing rules that limit the autonomy of individual conferences in deciding football tournament participants.

"The ACC's future model football schedule provides significant improvements for our schools and conferences, and most importantly, our student-athletes have the opportunity to play home and away at each school for four years," said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips. The INSIGHT Alliance is one of many alliances that Fogarty has launched to launch future leaders in its global health education program. The purpose of the Fogarty Program is to provide mentored training opportunities in global health research for doctoral candidates and postdoctoral fellows from the United States and LMICs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This program is sponsored by several partner institutions and centers of the Fogarty International Center (FIC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The consortium brings together four leading universities: University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) and University of Pittsburgh (UP) and their respective international research training bases in Africa and Asia and the Americas. Internal research projects are supported by experienced and dedicated mentors with experience in clinical research, public health research, laboratory research and implementation research.

The fellowship program is designed to provide the next generation of emerging global health researchers in the US and low- and middle-income countries with a global health mentoring experience for scientists at prominent early-career biomedical and behavioral research centers.

Our programs have four disease areas, four population areas, and three science areas that support global health research and the priority needs of our low- and middle-income partner institutions.

The premise of the Mentor-Tutor program is that institutional capacity building should be achieved by creating for each scholar a high-quality scholar under the mentorship of an American faculty mentor, an LMIC mentor, and two "co-mentors."

Spears said they reached out to previous seed fund recipients — 86 in total over five funding cycles — to learn what worked and what didn't.

Now is the time to start thinking about what-if ideas to revitalize the Pitt program, such as, "If you have an idea to create a better experience for students or provide better support and learning for faculty and staff," Spears said.

These ideas must be submitted in the form of a 90-second pitch video between January 7 and February 7. Spears said that the quality of the videos will not be judged, only the ideas.

Up to 30 items will be selected from these videos. Those selected will undergo six training sessions between the first week of March and the first week of May. Each project will receive $2,000.

"We pay people for the time they spend learning," Spears said. "I think it will help grantees better understand in real time what they can and can't do as we want to complete projects faster."

Of these 30 projects, up to 10 will receive $75,000 in prize money and become the first "Pitt Seed 2.0" cohort.

Selected projects will be announced in June and funding will begin in July 2022. Projects will have one year to develop their ideas. Spears said the chancellor was very interested: "What effect has the program had over the last year? How does that fit into Pitt's plan?"
