Public school students are scheduled to return Aug. 22, the district's first initiative in recent memory, according to a proposed schedule to be approved by the Board of Education at its monthly meeting Wednesday. The proposed calendar represents a radical departure from tradition.

For many years, the nation's third-largest school system opened its doors after Labor Day, though suburban districts moved their start dates to early August.

This year, CPS opened a week early for a full return to face-to-face instruction; That start before Labor Day was the earliest in nearly a decade.

When CPS was tested before Labor Day this year, turnout on the first day was lower than usual: 91.2% compared to the 2016 average and 94.3% in 2019, although this could be due and the pandemic. All students beginning their undergraduate career in Fall 2017 and beyond must use the Technical and Revised Elective List. This updated list includes a new "career elective" category that allows mechanical engineering students to take up to 3 credit hours (depending on technical elective requirements) of 300- or 400-level STEM courses, enhancing their career options .

Mechanical engineering students who began their undergraduate career prior to Fall 2017 (calendar year Fall 2017) may apply to complete the technical elective requirements listed above. requirements if they still want these courses to count toward their technical elective requirements. The department maintains a 2.25 cumulative grade point average (GPA) requirement for lower level technical courses. A student must meet the 2.25 GPA requirement to advance to upper-level ME or TAM courses (usually the 300/400 level). If a 2.25 GPA is not met, students may retake previous courses and reduce their course load to meet the 2.25 GPA requirement.

Once students enter advanced and specialized courses, a technical cumulative GPA (TGPA) requirement is met in addition to the traditional cumulative GPA requirement (>2.0 GPA to avoid probationary status). Students without a TGPA of at least 2.0 will be placed on probation and will not be able to graduate.
