Princeton University Academic Calendar 2023-24 – Princeton University is implementing a new academic calendar beginning in the 2020-21 academic year as announced in spring 2018. Due to COVID-19, some dates have been changed.

The new calendar will take effect at the start of the 2020-21 academic year. This means Princeton's academic year begins before Labor Day next year: opening exercises are on August 30, 2020, and the first day of classes is on September 2.

More than 80 percent of students surveyed said taking finals in January made them feel stressed during winter break. By moving fall exams to December and better distinguishing between midterms and Thanksgiving break, the new calendar will maintain the pace of instruction throughout the fall semester and allow students to enjoy a real break between terms.

The old calendar imposes higher financial costs on students who travel to campus for exams and then travel back to Intersession. Students will now have flexibility when they return to campus in January. Some may choose to return in early January to devote time to their freelance work. Others may return for the winter session. Given the different needs of these two groups, having different programs for each population will allow the university to best serve each group.

The Office of the Dean of the Faculty and Graduate School will issue an additional memo with additional details regarding schedule and salary changes in the coming weeks and months.
